Working Hard for all in Bishop Auckland

Walk, don’t drive

As part of a series of simple steps to save energy, Helen has argued that leaving the car behind on some journeys can help to reduce carbon emissions.

Helen said, “I’m not suggesting everyone sells their car - people need them for essential business like getting to work.

“But think about how you use your car. There are all those short little trips we make to post a letter, buy the morning papers or take the kids to school, when we could walk instead. It’s friendlier too – who winds down the car window to say hello to people passing in the other direction?

“These little bits of exercise can also help with our health and the other modern problem – the obesity epidemic. I used not to have car and then I bought one – nothing else changed in my life but within a month I was 3 pounds heavier!”

Walking

“This picture really does make clear the idea of a carbon footprint. A household in the UK emits about 10 tonnes of CO2 a year, because our way of life involved burning a lot of fossil fuels. This is 5 times as much as that of people in developing countries. So if we are to save the planet and allow them some space to tackle their poverty we need to change the way we consume resources.”
