TOP CHEF BACKS CHILDREN’S FOOD CAMPAIGN

Helen was praised this week by internationally renowned Chef, Raymond Blanc, for taking a stand to protect children from junk food TV advertising. [1]

Helen is leading a coalition of over 300 health, consumer and children’s organisations in calling for an end to junk food advertising on television before the 9pm watershed. [2]

Raymond Blanc said, “Childhood obesity is at record levels; across Britain one in three children are obese or overweight. It’s time for politicians to take some tough action to improve children’s health, and so I’m delighted that Helen has joined our call to protect kids from junk food adverts before 9pm.”

Helen Goodman has tabled a motion in Parliament, with cross-party support, which calls for a 9pm watershed on junk-food advertising.

She said, “Parents want to protect their children from the barrage of adverts for foods high in fat, sugar and salt.

“Ending junk food adverts before 9pm will improve the nation’s health to such an extent that it’s predicted it could save us hundreds of millions of pounds a year. It could also re-introduce children to good food and shared family meals.”

People who want to join the campaign can do so at the campaign website.

[2] The Children’s Food Campaign wants to improve children’s health and well-being through better food - and food teaching - in schools, and protecting children from junk food marketing. It is supported by over 300 organisations, almost 300 MPs and 12,000 members of the public. The coalition was behind the ground-breaking Children’s Food Bill introduced into Parliament last year.
