Search on for climate change ‘champion’
A new competition to find the North East’s climate change ‘champion’ has been backed by Helen.
The new competition is for young people aged 10-18 who can help spread the word about climate change. The initiative is designed to raise public awareness and change attitudes to climate change.
Helen has written to all the secondary schools in her constituency to encourage them to take part.
She said, “Climate change is the biggest challenge facing us in the UK and across the globe.
“Changing weather patterns can be devastating for developing countries, but they will also have a major effect on the North East. Sea levels are likely to rise and some of our native species of wildlife could be wiped out.
“Buts it’s no good just having politicians lecturing people about the problem. We need young people to spread the message at the local level. That’s why I’m encouraging young people to get involved in this competition.”
The Government is also promoting a £6m Climate Challenge Fund to support local-level projects that change attitudes about climate change. Details of the competition and scheme can be found at www.climatechallenge.gov.uk.
