Progress on road safety at Evenwood Gate

HELEN GOODMAN MP

PRESS RELEASE

19 February 2008

** For immediate release**

Durham County Council have confirmed that, following a public consultation, ‘considerable progress’ has been made to reduce the speed limit on the dangerous A688 at Evenwood Gate.

Helen Goodman, Member of Parliament for Bishop Auckland, has supported constituents’ calls for the introduction of a 40mph zone through Evenwood since 2005, and she is delighted that wheels are now in motion to improve the safety of this road, which has been the site of numerous accidents in recent years.

Helen said:

“It’s great news that the pubic consultation has been a success and that the Council has completed much of the preliminary work to improve this stretch of road.

I understand that DCC intend to start engineering work by the early summer, and I am sure that they will improve road safety and the quality of life for the residents of Evenwood.”

Durham County Council have formally advertised their proposed changes to the A688, which provides a further opportunity for the public to comment.
