Helen Goodman, MP for Bishop Auckland, has paid tribute to the hard work of local children and teachers as today’s primary school results showed a further rise in standards.
Across the Durham Local Authority, 89% of primary school children achieved or surpassed the Government’s Level 4 target in Science, while 80% reached Level 4 in English, and 79% in Maths.
These results comparable favourably with national averages, and show a dramatic increase of 19%, 14%, and 18% respectively in Science, Maths and English since 1997.
More local primary school pupils than ever are now achieving the target level in the three core subjects, and Helen reserved special praise for St John’s Primary School in Shildon and Green Lane Primary School in Barnard Castle, who were both named in the top 100 schools across the country on the value added index – which takes account of the progress children make between one stage of education and the next.
Helen said: “I am absolutely delighted that so many local primary school children are performing so well. These figures are testament to the skill and dedication of children and teachers across the constituency, and clearly vindicate the Labour Government’s decision to invest in Primary Schools and cut class sizes”.
