Post Office Ltd. Announce Closures in Bishop Auckland

HELEN GOODMAN MP

PRESS RELEASE

11 February 2008

** For immediate release**

Helen Goodman, Member of Parliament for Bishop Auckland, is campaigning against the proposed closure of 12 local post offices across the Bishop Auckland constituency.

The proposals – announced as part of the Post Office Ltd’s wider ‘Network Change’ modernisation program – threaten the branches at Bolam, Boldron, Hutton Magna, Jubilee Fields, Kirk Merrington, Leeholme, Page Bank, Romaldkirk, South Church, Toft Hill, Tudhoe Colliery and Winston.

Helen said:

“I am extremely concerned about these proposals and the impact they will have on local communities.

Post offices are one of our most cherished community amenities, and I fear that these closures will reduce the quality of the local postal service, and leave people more dependent on car use.

These closures will inevitably be felt most by those living in rural areas, and the infrequent nature of some local bus services will make it much harder for people to use the post office’

Helen will be visiting many of the branches affected this afternoon (Monday), and will be organising a petition against these closures on her website www.helengoodman.co.uk.
