PETITION FROM BISHOP AUCKLAND RESIDENTS PRESENTED TO PARLIAMENT

Helen has presented a petition to the House of Commons calling for more aid for the developing world.

The petition was collected during fair trade fortnight in March this year. It attracted signatures from people across the County in local Co-op stores, Oxfam shops, and at churches and fair trade coffee mornings. The Bishop of Durham is the first signatory to the petition.

Helen said, “Local people feel strongly that producers in the developing world deserve a fair chance to sell their goods. While overseas aid is vital, it is only through fair trade that poorer countries will free themselves from poverty.

“I was pleased to present the petition to Parliament so that the voice of local people will be heard. It calls for more action on trade, more aid and for the abolition of poor countries’ debt. It also calls for new laws to make sure we meet our commitments to provide aid to developing countries.”
