Helen Goodman MP reacts to today’s Unemployment Figures

Responding to today’s unemployment figures Helen Goodman MP said:

“Today’s figures reveal the tragic human cost of the government’s economic policy. The impact is being felt most acutely by women and young people in my constituency.

The labour market statistics for Bishop Auckland expose the painful reality of the governments mishandling of the economy. My constituency has seen, an eye watering, 43% increase in female unemployment over the past twelve months; providing further evidence that the current government’s policies are disproportionately impacting on women.

Furthermore the rate of youth unemployment now stands at 15% which is significantly higher than the North East average of 11.2%. Consigning the region’s young people to the scrap heap in this way is totally unacceptable and a waste of their untapped potential.

The figures above also further discredit the government’s Plan A for the economy, with its promise to deliver jobs and growth.

We must change course now to avoid the lost generation we saw in the 1980s and prevent millions from languishing on the dole queue.”

Helen questions Education Minister on children living in broadband ‘not spots’ in County Durham

Helen Goodman has question the Minister of State for Schools Mr Nick Gibb on the issue of children who live in so-called broadband ‘not spots’ in County Durham.

Helen questioned the Minister during Education questions, where she raised the case of two villages in County Durham where broadband access is very poor.

She asked “In Byers Green and Binchester in my constituency there are broadband not-spots—they are surrounded by areas that are well served—and so children are told to do homework, using broadband, that they simply cannot do. Will the Minister either lobby his colleagues to ensure that broadband is accessible throughout the country or take steps to make sure that secondary schools stop requiring children to do homework that they simply cannot do?”

Helen’s question followed on from a public meeting in Byer’s Green earlier this month, where the issue of poor broadband connectivity was one of the major issues discussed.

Helen’s question, and the Minister’s answer can be read here: http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm201011/cmhansrd/cm111121/debtext/111121-0001.htm#1111216000498
