MORE FREEDOM FOR CHARITIES
New laws to give charities the tools they need to make a difference in today’s society have been given firm backing by Helen.
Helen, who worked for two charities before entering Parliament, is championing the Labour Government’s Charities Bill, which will modernise the law relating to charities. Helen served on the Commons committee that considered the Bill this month.
She said, “These new moves have been warmly welcomed by charities across Britain. We need to reduce the burdens on charities so they can use more of their time and resources for public benefit.
“I know from when I ran a small children’s charity that large administrative burdens can really distract from achieving the goals of the organisation. I have pressed Ministers so they understand the importance of minimising all the forms that charities have to fill in.
“I think the new rules will give a real boost to the kinds of local charities I have met recently, such as Durham Dales Carers and Spennymoor Learning Library.”
The Charities Bill will be considered again by the House of Commons later this year.
