Local MP welcomes Remploy Modernisation Plan

HELEN GOODMAN MP

PRESS RELEASE

** For immediate release**

Helen Goodman, MP for Bishop Auckland, has welcomed today’s statement by Peter Hain, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, concerning the Remploy modernisation plan

The Remploy factory in Spennymoor had been identified for closure but, following a lengthy campaign by workers, trade unions and local MPs, the Secretary of State confirmed today that Remploy Spennymoor will be retained as a regional base for recycling and manufacturing rework.

Helen met with a delegation of Remploy workers in the House of Commons on Tuesday and expressed both her delight that the Spennymoor factory will be retained, and her commitment to do everything possible to ensure the long-term future of the factory.

Helen said: “It’s been a long struggle to keep the Spennymoor factory open, and today’s announcement confirms that it’s been well worth it. The hard work, however, has only just begun: we urgently need to work with local and regional government authorities to ensure that Remploy secures sufficient contracts to safeguard the long-term future of the plant”.

Helen has therefore written to local authority and government offices across the North East to encourage them to contact Remploy to discuss the services and business opportunities they offer.

Helen said: “Given the high quality of Remploy’s work and the important economic and social function the company perform across the North East, I am optimistic that Remploy Spennymoor has a bright future”.
