JOINT CALL FOR COUNTY-WIDE FREE BUS PASS

Four County Durham MPs, including Helen, have called on district councils in the area to join forces in a free bus pass scheme for the whole county.

A government scheme - promising free local bus travel for older and disabled people – is due to enter force in April.  But the scheme will only offer pensioners free travel within their own district.  Now Kevan Jones MP (North Durham), Roberta Blackman-Woods MP (City of Durham), John Cummings MP (Easington), and Helen (Bishop Auckland) have called for district councils to work together, along with Durham County Council, to provide a scheme for the entire county.

Helen said, “Many local people rely on public transport to get around, and bus fares can really start to add up for those on fixed incomes.  A free bus pass covering the whole county would make a real difference to the lives of many older and disabled people.  I’m calling on all the local councils to get together and take advantage of the opportunity the Government has provided.”
