HOW TO REDUCE HEATING BILLS

Helen has concluded her simple steps to save energy by advising constituents how to improve energy efficiency in the home.

Wooly jumper

She said, “This is a picture of my daughter in her new woolly jumper.

“If you put on a jumper and socks you can turn down your thermostat by 1˚C, which could cut your heating bills by up to 10 per cent and save you around £40 per year. I don’t recommend this if your children are under 5, you are ill or over 75, but for the rest of us it’s straightforward.

“It’s important too that children learn good habits now. They’re often very well informed about climate change, because they’ve done projects at school on this, or the rainforests or recycling (ask them). So it is easy to motivate them to adapt their behaviour a little bit and they are the ones who will really see the benefits in the future if we treat our planet responsibly now.

“If you want to: make more radical changes like switching to low energy lightbulbs. They cost more to buy but over a 5 year period, but each one can save you up to £100.

“Probably the biggest change you could make is to improve your home insulation. To get local help and advice on saving energy ring 0800 512 012 or visit the Energy Saving Trust at www.est.org.uk.

“You may also be able to get money to improve your home energy efficiency through the Warm Front scheme. Call 0800 316 6011.

“Remember you may qualify for a grant, so check now.”
