Housing boom offers bright future for Electrolux Spennymoor
Helen has written to Electrolux management to emphasise the “considerable opportunities” the company risks losing out on if it decides to close its Spennymoor factory.
Electrolux announced in October that it is reviewing the future of its 500-employee cookermaking factory in Spennymoor in light of growing global competition and falling profits.
But Helen has emphasised to Electrolux management that the Government’s ambitious plan to build three million new homes by 2020 offers a bright future for the company.
Helen wrote: “Sales of your ovens are strongly correlated to the level of house building and house sales in the UK.
The Government have recently announced a major house building project, which will see three million new homes built in England by 2020, with 240,000 new homes being built per year by 2016. Given that house building levels in England are currently at 173,000 a year, this represents a 40% increase that opens considerable opportunities for Electrolux in the UK market”.
Helen has also held meetings with Electrolux management, local Trade Unions, the Regional Development Agency, the County Durham Development Company, and the Minister for the North East, Nick Brown, in an attempt to safeguard the future of the Spennymoor factory.
