Helen joined families and expectant mothers at a Parliamentary reception organised by Usdaw to celebrate the extension of family-friendly working hours and the introduction of health in pregnancy grants.
From today (April 6th) the right to request flexible working will be extended to all parents of children up to the age of 16, and health in pregnancy grants will also be introduced, providing a one-off payment of £190 for mothers whose babies are due after this date.
The Usdaw reception also celebrated the introduction of Sure Start centres, free nursery places and the extension of paid maternity and paternity leave to 39 weeks and 2 weeks respectively (see right)
Helen said:
“Two years ago, I spent a week trying to live on income support, and I realised just how tough it is. So I am delighted that families and mothers in Bishop Auckland will benefit from these measures, which provide real support to those who need it most”.
