Helen has been appointed Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions in Gordon Brown’s new Government.
Her new role will focus on combating child poverty and improving childcare.
Prior to becoming an MP in 2005, Helen held senior positions with two children’s charities (The Children’s Society and the National Toy and Leisure Leisure Library) and she has championed the fight against child poverty regularly as an MP, including in her maiden speech.
Helen said:
“I am delighted to be joining DWP and I am looking forward to the opportunity work to eradicate child poverty and improve the availability of affordable childcare. These are difficult times and the DWP is well placed to provide real help to people affected by the current economic situation.”
Previously, Helen was an Assistant Government Whip and also served as Deputy Leader of the House of Commons from June 2007 to October 2008.
