Helen highlights local jobs, tourism and housing in Whitsun adjournment debate
Helen concluded the Whitsun adjournment debate in the House of Commons by highlighting the sights, strengths and attractions of Co. Durham.
As well as emphasising the impact of record inward investment in the region, Helen spoke in support of the Wear Valley ALMO, and invited MPs to pay a visit to Co. Durham over Whitsun.
Helen said:
“Hon. Members could have a very enjoyable time in County Durham during the Whitsun recess. They could see many beautiful and excellent things.
For example, there is a very good locomotion museum in Shildon (pictured, right) in my constituency. It is where the first steam engine was built. Some 150,000 people a year come to the museum, which offers a great family day out.
At the Bowes museum in Barnard Castle there is a particularly fine exhibition of the pictures of Alfred Sisley this summer. It is the first Sisley retrospective for 30 years, and hon. Members would enjoy it very much if they came”.
Helen also praised Dale and Vale Homes for the work they have done to improve affordable housing provision across Wear Valley.
Helen said:
“The hon. Member for Blaenau Gwent (Mr. Davies) spoke about council housing and his desire to see the council housing in his constituency refurbished. He questioned why it was necessary to put the management out to an arm’s length management organisation. Let me take the hon. Gentleman into my confidence. I questioned the policy until I saw the way it operated in my constituency. One of my local authorities, Wear Valley, has an ALMO, and the quality of management and the level of investment have improved out of all proportion”.
