Helen Goodman MP responds to today’s alarming youth unemployment statistics

Last month there were still 663 more JSA claimants in the Bishop Auckland constituency than in June 2011.

The number of young people (aged 18 – 24) on JSA for over 12 months has risen by an alarming 1367% showing that this out of touch government is still failing to provide hope for our young people. And nationally the number of young people claiming JSA for 6 months is at its highest level since April 1997. In the last year it has risen by 83,000 – 96%!

Helen Goodman MP said:

“Every week we hear promises from the government that they are tackling youth unemployment but today’s figures show that far from showing commitment to “tackling the blight of youth unemployment” the Prime Minister is letting down a whole generation of young people. With rising tuition fees, cuts to further education and 8 claimants to every job vacancy what hope will this out of touch government give to our young people leaving school and college this summer?”
