Durham Gateway set to boost local economy
Helen has welcomed proposals for a £100 million regeneration project on a 55-acre site by the Green Lane Industrial Park in Spennymoor.
The ‘Durham Gateway’ development, led by construction company Carillion and local property developers Arlington, would create an estimated 2,000 jobs and provide a much-needed boost to the local economy.
Final proposals will be submitted in the summer but, in addition to creating new office accomodation capacity, they are likely to include:
● 300 new homes
● Major road improvements to link the industrial estate with the A167
● A hotel/restaurant complex
● A doctor’s surgery and pharmacy
● A gym and leisure centre
This announcement is particularly welcome in light of recent job losses at the Black & Decker and Electrolux factories in Spennymoor.
Helen said:
“These plans are fantastic news for Spennymoor and proof of the durability of the local economy.
When I met recently with the managing director of Arlington, I was really impressed by the scale and ambition of their proposals and I look forward to seeing the final submissions in the summer”.
