DEERBOLT REPORT WELCOMED
Helen has welcomed the publication of a new report by HMI Prisons on Deerbolt Young Offenders Institution, near Barnard Castle in her constituency.
Helen said, “This report shows that Deerbolt performs well, or reasonably well, on the big tests of safety, respect, purposeful activity, and resettlement. This is a tribute to the professionalism of staff dealing with a difficult group of young men.
“Obviously time in prison must be a balance between punishment for offending, and ensuring the young people have a purposeful way of life that reduces their chances of returning to crime. On this measure, Deerbolt seems to be doing reasonably well.
“This confirms what I saw when I visited the young offenders institution last year. There are good facilities for the young men to learn useful vocational skills, which should in future help them to find work and lead responsible lives.
“The report says ‘We were particularly impressed by the use of the 55 voluntary support workers who helped…with learning’. This is important and I hope there will continue to be a fruitful relationship between Deerbolt and the local community.”
