Black & Decker announce jobs losses at Spennymoor factory
HELEN GOODMAN MP
PRESS RELEASE
29th January 2007
** For immediate release**
Helen Goodman, the Member of Parliament for Bishop Auckland, has expressed her grave concern at the proposed relocation of the Black & Decker manufacturing department at Green Lane, Spennymoor.
Black & Decker have confirmed that, while 150 jobs will remain at the Spennymoor site, 169 manufacturing, finance and HR jobs are at risk from management proposals.
Helen said:
“I am extremely concerned by this announcement, and have asked for an urgent meeting with Black & Decker management.
“Black & Decker have been a prized local employer for over forty years, and while I am pleased that 150 high quality jobs have been secured, my thoughts are with the 169 workers whose jobs are under threat”.
Helen has been in discussions today with the Black & Decker management, Sedgefield Council, the Regional Development Agency, the County Durham Development Council and the North East Government Office, to co-ordinate a response to this announcement.
Helen said:
“I understand that any planned redundancies will be phased over a timescale stretching in to 2009, and I will therefore be working with Job Centre North East and all local agencies to ensure the alternative employment opportunities are in place”
