Better policing for the North East

Helen has welcomed an announcement by the Home Secretary that a new police force will be created in the North East through the merger of the constabularies in Cleveland, Durham and Northumbria.

She said, “I backed this policy last week in the Commons as it will mean better policing in Bishop Auckland constituency.

“Research has shown that smaller police forces are less able to cope with the kinds of serious and organised crime that increasingly face us in the 21st century. By combining resources in the North East we will strengthen police capacity and deal with crime more effectively.

“However, it is at the local neighbourhood level where most people want to see the police out and about dealing with problems. I support the Government’s plans for more neighbourhood policing. Strategic reorganisation will mean the local bobby is much less likely to be called away to deal with a bigger incident in the next town or county.”

Helen spoke on this issue earlier in February in the House of Commons. You can read more here.
