It was announced in December that Electrolux are to cease operations at their Merrington Lane site (see left), with the loss of 500 jobs.

But since then a Task Force including representatives from the County Durham Development Company, Job Centre Plus, Sedgefield Borough Council, Durham County Council, One NorthEast, the North East Chamber of Commerce, the Employers Federation, Business Link North East and Right Management, have worked to find alternative employment for the Electrolux staff.

The Task Force have now found 500 new jobs, with companies such as Nissan and Cummins eager to utilise the skills and experience of the Electrolux workforce.

Helen said:

“The closure of the Electrolux factory cast a shadow over the recent success of our local economy, but I was always confident that new jobs could be found for such a highly skilled workforce.

The task force have worked tremendously hard over the last few months, and I am delighted that 500 new jobs have already been found.

This shows the durability of the local economy, and that the North East continues to attract large overseas investment”.

Helen also spoke of the strength of North East economy in the Whitsun adjournment debate yesterday in the House of Commons. You can read more about this by clicking here.
