RESPECT YOUR SHOPKEEPERS

Helen is backing the campaign by the retail Union USDAW to tackle anti-social behaviour against shopkeepers.

As part of this campaign, Helen will visit the Co-operative store in Redworth Road, Shildon, which has recently suffered a serious break-in and has piloted a number of innovative approaches to tackling crime and anti-social behaviour.

Helen will also see the impact that improved in-store security and the local Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership have had in protecting shopkeepers and retail employees.

Helen said:
“The break-in and anti-social behaviour that we have seen at the Redworth Co-op are indicative of a wider trend across the country. Research shows that over one-third of UK shopkeepers are verbally abused every month in their workplaces, and that figure is completely unacceptable”.

The ‘Respect for Shopkeepers’ campaign is being led by USDAW, who have welcomed MPs’ support for tougher powers to tackle anti-social behaviour against retail employees.

John Hannett, USDAW General Secretary, said: “Our members in Bishop Auckland are delighted to have Helen’s support in this campaign.”
