‘An Inconvenient Truth’ at Bishop Auckland College
Helen recently attended a screening of Al Gore’s award winning film ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ as part of an evening of lively debate surrounding climate change at Bishop Auckland College.
Helen was a member of the Pre-Legislative Scrutiny Committee for the Climate Change Bill, and following the screening of ‘An Inconvenient Truth’, she spoke on the politics of climate change in the UK. Helen reiterated both her support for a strong Climate Change Bill, and her personal commitment to lowering the carbon footprint of her family.
Helen said:
“The science of climate change has moved on since the bill was drafted and Gordon Brown has indicated that the 60% reduction target for CO2 emissions will be reviewed to see if an increase is needed. The Pre-Legislative Scrutiny Committee recommended that aviation and shipping emissions be included, and I am sure DEFRA will take this recommendation seriously”.
The evening was rounded off by a panel discussion which featured Helen alongside Wear Valley District Councillor Geoffrey Mowbray and Jess Dolan of Friends of the Earth. The audience challenged the panel on key issues such as public transport and grants for renewable projects and found out ways that they could reduce their carbon footprint without compromising their standard of living.
The evening was part of Friends of the Earth’s nationally renowned climate change campaign - ‘The Big Ask’.
